Welcome to Owl Class where we love to learn through play and exploration and are curious about all of the things around us. We truly care about children’s Early Years education and know that getting it right is crucial in providing the building blocks for their future.
At Avishayes, we believe that those building blocks start from their very first experience of education with us. We believe it is important that children obtain the key essentials that will support them throughout their time in education. We are committed to maximising this stage by providing a skilled team and a child-centred curriculum that puts structured play at the heart of all we do. We know you are entrusting the most precious part of your life to our care and we won’t let you down.
At Avishayes we are proud of our Curious Chard curriculum the children follow through the school right from our Nursery class through to year 6. Children are immersed into states of being through their enquiries learning the skills and techniques required to be successful in their learning.
Once in Reception children will begin their phonics journey. Phonics is recommended as the first strategy that children should be taught in helping them to learn to read. It runs alongside other teaching methods such as guided reading and shared reading to help children develop all of the other vital reading skills and hopefully give them a real love of reading. At Avishayes Primary School we use a programme called FFT to support early reading.
Our Reception class is led by an Early Years Specialised Qualified Teacher who is supported by her dedicated team who have a wealth of early years experience and knowledge. Our aim is to provide children with exciting, broad and balanced curriculum which allows for the development of language and learning across all of the 7 early years learning areas.
Children are part of their own learning journey as well by sharing their interests with us. Our highly trained staff are able to use these interests as a stimulus which allows for the children to develop their knowledge and enhance their experiences.
The children in Owl class can always be found to be fully immersed within their play. During our continuous provision which we like to call OWL time-our wonderful learning, we are able to offer a wide range of experiences and challenges for all children in the class. Children are encouraged to take control of their learning by completing set learning challenges during their OWL time over the week. These all directly link to knowledge and skills the children are developing in their enquiries.
The children take part on weekly welly walks exploring their locality, visits to Chard Reservoir. As part of our enquiry learning we have had a visit from Owl Enlightment who bought 7 owls with her, we have had a tractor visit and we will be visiting Foxdown Farm and Charmouth beach in the Spring and Summer terms.
Throughout the year we offer a range of opportunities for you to come in to school and spend time with your child, through regular celebrations of learning and themed afternoon sessions, these include; read with your child, a craft together afternoon, maths games afternoon and special person afternoons. It is lovely to see the children so excited at having you come in to the classroom to share some learning time with them.
We look forward to welcoming you on your child’s learning journey.
Before your child starts in our setting, we offer a Home Visit. This gives you and your child the opportunity to start building those key relationships with members of our staff and ask those questions you forgot to ask when having a tour! It gives us the opportunity to tell you about Avishayes Early Years Centre and learn more about your child in a relaxed way.
Each child in the Early Years Centre is assigned a Key Person. In Reception, the Key Person will always be the class teacher.
Progress meetings are offered twice a year. You are encouraged to attend these to discuss your child’s progress. However, if you require additional meetings, or just an informal chat, please do not hesitate to talk to a member of staff.
Regular attendance is expected or your child’s place may be at risk. If for any reason your child is unwell, please contact the school office (01460 63050) to let us know as soon as possible.
